What Are Skin Tags?
Skin tags are soft, skin-colored growths that hang off of the skin and are typically harmless. They can appear anywhere on the body but are most commonly found in areas where the skin folds, such as the neck, armpits, groin, and under the breasts. Skin tags are formed when clusters of collagen and blood vessels become trapped inside thicker pieces of skin. While they are usually painless and non-cancerous, they can sometimes become irritated if they catch on clothing or jewelry.
How Can Skin Tags Be Treated?
There are several simple and effective methods to remove skin tags. Depending on their size and location, your Evolve dermatologist might suggest one of the following treatments:
- Cryotherapy: This involves freezing the skin tag with liquid nitrogen, causing it to fall off after a few days.
- Electrodessication: The skin tag is burned off, a procedure that uses electric current.
- Excision: The dermatologist will use a scalpel or surgical scissors to cut off the skin tag.
These procedures are quick and can often be done in-office with minimal discomfort and downtime. The removal of skin tags is considered elective and is not usually covered by insurance.
