What is a Cyst?
Cysts are a common skin condition characterized by the development of a keratin or fluid filled pocket beneath the surface of the skin. These lesions can vary in size from a small pea to several centimeters in diameter. While many cysts are benign and painless, they can sometimes become inflamed, infected, or painful.
When should I seek cyst removal?
While many cysts are harmless and many do not require treatment, you should consider removal if:
- The cyst repeatedly becomes painful, inflamed, or infected.
- It is growing rapidly.
- It interferes with your daily activities or becomes bothersome.
- There is concern about its cosmetic appearance.
What can I expect during cyst removal?
To minimize the risk of cyst recurrence, it is important that the entire cyst capsule is removed during your procedure.
Our dermatologic surgeons will first inject a local numbing agent into the area to ease discomfort throughout the procedure. An incision in the skin is then made to access the cyst capsule and remove the cyst in its entirety. Once removed, the dermatologist will carefully repair the area with stitches. Our team of experienced dermatologists use small incisions and operative techniques to minimize scarring.
After removal, the tissue is sent to pathology to ensure that the lesion is benign.
The length of the procedure varies based upon cyst size and location, but typically can be completed in a thirty-minute appointment.
