What are Lipomas?
Lipomas are non-cancerous, soft, fatty lumps that develop under the skin. They are typically slow-growing and can move slightly when pressed. Fortunately, lipomas are usually painless and are generally harmless. However, these lesions can be distressing to patients due to their cosmetic appearance.
Why Do Lipomas Form?
The exact cause of lipomas is not well understood, but several factors may contribute to their formation. A family history of lipomas can increase the likelihood of developing them. Additionally, it is thought that age may play a role in their development as they most commonly occur in middle-aged adults, typically between the ages of 40 and 60. It has also been suggested that trauma may trigger the growth of a lipoma in some cases. These lesions are the result of the organized accumulation of extra fat cells under the surface of the skin.
How Can Lipomas be Treated?
While lipomas are generally harmless, patients may desire removal if they become bothersome, painful, or cosmetically undesirable. Lipomas can be treated with surgical excision.
