What are Keloids?
Keloids are overgrown scars that form when the skin heals after an injury. Unlike regular scars, keloids extend beyond the original injury site and may continue to grow over time. They can appear as raised, thick, reddish, brown or purplish areas on the skin, often feeling firm or rubbery to the touch. Keloids can occur anywhere on the body, but are most commonly found on the chest, shoulders, earlobes, and cheeks.
What are the Risk Factors for Developing Keloids?
Several factors can increase the likelihood of developing keloids, including:
- Genetics: If you have a family history of keloids, you are more likely to develop them.
- Skin Type: People with darker skin tones, particularly those of African, Asian, or Hispanic descent, are at higher risk.
- Injuries: Even minor skin injuries like acne scars, piercings, surgical scars, burns, or cuts can lead to the formation of keloids.
