What is Psoriasis?

Psoriasis is a chronic skin condition that is caused by overactivity of the immune system which speeds up the growth cycle of skin cells, leading to the development of thick, red patches covered with silvery scales. These patches can be itchy, inflamed, and sometimes painful. Psoriasis is not contagious but rather develops from a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Although there is technically no cure for psoriasis, many extremely effective medications have been developed that have allowed patients to clear or significantly improve their skin symptoms.

What are the Different Types of Psoriasis?

There are several types of psoriasis, each with its own characteristics:

  • Plaque Psoriasis: This is the most common form of psoriasis and is characterized by raised, red patches covered with a silvery-white buildup of dead skin cells, usually found on the elbows, knees, scalp, and lower back.
  • Guttate Psoriasis: This type of psoriasis usually looks like small, red dots and is often found on the chest, arms and legs. This type of psoriasis may be triggered by infections such as strep throat, and more typically affects children and young adults.
  • Inverse Psoriasis: Causes red, shiny, smooth patches that occur in body folds such as the armpits, groin and under the breasts.
  • Pustular Psoriasis: Characterized by white pustules that look similar to many small whiteheads clustered together. This type of psoriasis can be localized to certain areas, like the hands or soles of the feet, or may spread across the body.
  • Erythrodermic Psoriasis: This is a severe and rare form of psoriasis that causes widespread redness and scaling that covers a large area of the body. It can be accompanied by severe itching, pain, and swelling.
