What is Eczema?

Eczema, also known as atopic dermatitis, is a chronic skin condition characterized by inflamed, itchy, and sometimes painful patches of skin. It is a common condition affecting individuals of all ages, though it’s particularly prevalent in children. Eczema can have a significant impact on quality of life, often requiring ongoing dermatologic management to keep symptoms under control.

What are the Causes of Eczema?

The exact cause of eczema is not fully understood, but it is believed to result from a combination of genetic and environmental factors. A gene variation that impairs your skin’s ability to act as an adequate barrier between you and the environment has been linked to eczema. As a result of this gene variation, your skin is not as well equipped to deal with the various environmental exposures that you encounter in your day to day activities. This, in combination with increased hypersensitivity of the immune system, results in inflammation within the skin and results in dry, irritated, and itchy skin.

Patients with a family history of eczema or related skin conditions are at an increased risk of developing eczema. It is important to seek dermatologic care early in the course of the disease in order to better restore skin health, control symptoms and minimize the impact on your quality of life. Factors that have been identified to contribute to the development of eczema include:

  • Genetic Predisposition: A family history of eczema, allergies, or asthma increases the likelihood of developing the condition.
  • Immune System Dysfunction: An overactive immune response can trigger inflammation, leading to eczema symptoms.
  • Environmental Triggers: Common triggers include pollen, pet dander, molds, and dust mites, as well as irritants like soap, detergents, and certain fabrics.
  • Skin Barrier Defects: Abnormalities in the skin barrier can lead to increased moisture loss and vulnerability to irritants and allergens.
  • Stress and Hormonal Changes: These can exacerbate eczema in some individuals.

What are the Symptoms of Eczema?

Eczema symptoms can vary from person to person and may include:

  • Red, dry, itchy skin
  • Raw, sensitive skin
  • Patches of thickened skin with overlying scale or textural changes
  • Small, raised, itchy bumps
  • Discolored patches on the neck, hands, ankles, feet or other areas of the body
  • Thickened, cracked skin
