What are Seborrheic Keratoses?

Seborrheic keratoses are common, non-cancerous skin growths that often appear as wart-like or stuck-on lesions on the surface of the skin. These lesions can vary in appearance and can be tan, brown, black, pink or white and can be flat or raised. These typically develop in middle-aged and older adults and can occur anywhere on the body, except for the palms and soles. Because of their varied appearance, these lesions are often misdiagnosed as warts or skin cancers.

Are Seborrheic Keratoses Dangerous?

Seborrheic keratoses are benign, which means they are not dangerous and do not develop into skin cancer. However, they can sometimes be mistaken for other types of skin growths, so it is important to have any new or changing lesions evaluated by a dermatologist. Although they are harmless, seborrheic keratoses can become irritated, itchy, or aesthetically bothersome, which may prompt treatment.

How do Dermatologists Treat Seborrheic Keratoses?

There are several effective treatments to remove seborrheic keratoses if they become bothersome or cosmetically unappealing. These lesions are usually treated a few at a time and options for treatment include cryotherapy, electrocautery, curettage, and laser therapy.
