What is Melasma?

Melasma is a common skin condition characterized by dark, discolored patches that can appear anywhere on the body but most commonly appear on the face, particularly on the cheeks, forehead, nose, and upper lip. These patches are usually brown or grayish in color and can vary in size and shape. Melasma is not harmful, but it can cause cosmetic concern and affect self-esteem.

Why Does Melasma Develop?

Melasma occurs much more commonly in women than it does in men. Medical experts have not been able to identify the exact cause of melasma, but it is believed to result from a combination of factors.

Hormonal changes that commonly affect women are often to blame for melasma. These changes are seen in women who are pregnant, are taking oral contraceptive pills or are on other hormone replacement therapies. We also know that ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun is a significant trigger, stimulating melanocytes (pigment-producing cells) to produce more pigment. Additionally, we know that darker skinned individuals are more prone to melasma due to their higher number of active pigment producing cells. Regardless of your risk factors, if you are experiencing pigment changes in your skin, contact Evolve Dermatology for an evaluation.

How Can Melasma be Treated?

Your dedicated dermatologist at Evolve Dermatology is often able to confirm a diagnosis of melasma with a simple skin examination. Occasionally, additional testing may be performed by your dermatologist to rule out other conditions that can mimic melasma. Once the diagnosis is made, your dermatologists will work with you to identify any potential triggers and will develop a personalized, effective treatment protocol.

In general, melasma management typically involves a combination of sun protection, topical treatments, and sometimes, procedural interventions. Your dermatologist can prescribe individualized topical compounds to lighten your skin gradually over time. In some cases, oral therapy with tranexamic acid can be used. Undergoing in-office microneedling or chemical peel treatments at Evolve Dermatology can also help even out your skin tone.

Your dermatologist will be sure to discuss preventative care and work alongside you to implement lifestyle changes to minimize the risk of future melasma flares.

If you are experiencing melasma, schedule a consultation with us to explore your treatment options and achieve clearer, more radiant skin.
