What are Actinic Keratoses?
Actinic keratoses (AKs) are precancerous skin lesions caused by long-term exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun or tanning beds. These lesions represent an early stage in the potential development of a type of skin cancer called squamous cell carcinoma. Early detection and treatment are crucial to prevent progression of these lesions.
What Do Actinic Keratoses Look Like?
Actinic keratoses most commonly develop on sun exposed areas of the body, but have the ability to develop anywhere on the skin. Patients should look out for lesions that are new, raised, rough or scaly, have red, pink or brown color variations or that are bleeding or not healing. Some lesions may itch, burn or cause discomfort.
How are Actinic Keratoses Treated?
There are several effective treatments for Actinic Keratoses, and the best option depends on factors such as the number, size, and location of the lesions, as well as the patient’s skin type and overall health. Treatment options include:
- Prescription topical medications
- Cryotherapy
- Photodynamic Therapy
- Curettage
- Electrodesiccation
- Shave removal
Prevention and Monitoring
- Sun Protection: We recommend that all of our patients consistently use broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher, wear protective clothing, and avoid peak sun hours.
- Regular Skin Exams: Schedule routine check-ups with your dermatologist and perform self-examinations for early detection of any new or changing lesions.
