What is Molluscum Contagiosum?
Molluscum contagiosum is a very common skin infection that is caused by a virus. While molluscum can affect anyone, it most commonly occurs in children, and is easily transmitted from person to person via direct contact or through towels, clothing, etc. The virus causes small, skin colored bumps to appear on the body. These bumps are generally asymptomatic, though some patients may report associated itching. Although these bumps tend to disappear on their own, it can sometimes take years before they resolve completely.
How is Molluscum Contagiosum Diagnosed?
Diagnosis of molluscum contagiosum is typically done through a simple physical examination. Our experienced dermatologists at Evolve Dermatology can identify the characteristic lesions by their appearance. In rare cases, a skin biopsy might be performed to confirm the diagnosis, as these lesions can occasionally mimic other processes.
How is Molluscum Treated?
Fortunately, numerous treatment options exist to try and expedite the clearance of these lesions. Our experienced dermatologists at Evolve Dermatology will evaluate your skin and determine whether treatment is needed, and if so, which treatment option is best for you. Treatments include cryotherapy, curettage, in office topical therapy and home topical treatments. Treatment of these lesions is generally well tolerated. Your dermatologist will also counsel you on best practices to avoid the spread of these lesions, including good hygiene practices, avoiding sharing personal items such as towels or clothing and avoiding picking or scratching at the lesions.
Will My Child Be Able to Tolerate Treatment?
