What is Basal Cell Carcinoma?

Basal cell carcinoma (BCCs) is the most common type of skin cancer in the United States, with over 4 million cases diagnosed each year. BCCs develop primarily due to prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun over the course of a patient’s lifetime. Fortunately, BCCs rarely metastasize, but early detection and treatment is crucial due to their ability to cause significant local destruction if not treated. Although BCCs are more common in patients with fair skin, they can also develop in persons with skin of color. Additional risk factors include patients with a personal or family history of skin cancer, radiation and immunosuppression.

What do Basal Cell Carcinoma look like?

Basal cell carcinoma can appear in various forms, which can make them challenging for patients to identify. Typical appearances include:

  • Pearly or Waxy Bumps
  • Flat, Scaly Patches
  • Raised, Reddish Patches
  • Sores
  • Scar-like Areas

BCCs most commonly occur on sun-exposed areas of the body such as the face, ears, neck, scalp, shoulders, and back.

How is Basal Cell Carcinoma Diagnosed?

Most basal cell carcinoma is first identified during a routine skin exam. Your dermatologist will then perform a biopsy to confirm the diagnosis.

How is Basal Cell Carcinoma Treated?

Treatment for basal cell carcinoma depends on the cancer subtype, size, depth of invasion and location. The majority of these lesions are treated with either wide local excision or Mohs micrographic surgery. Additional treatment options include cryotherapy, curettage and electrodessication, prescription topical creams, or targeted chemotherapy or radiation therapy. Our experienced dermatologists will ensure that you receive the best treatment for your lesion.
